Code of Conduct

We value the participation of everyone at the Following the Affective Turn events and want them to be fulfilling and enjoyable for everyone regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, class, age or religion. We will not tolerate any form of harassment or discrimination.

Participants are expected to adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Act respectfully. Harassment and sexist, racist, or exclusionary comments or 'jokes' are not appropriate at any time (including lunches and social events). Harassment includes verbal or physical abuse, offensive comments, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, sexual attention or innuendo, deliberate intimidation, stalking, and photography or recording of an individual without consent.

  • Behave professionally. Following the Affective Turn events should be held in a safe, comfortable, and professional environment. Participants should be courteous with the opinions of others and be mindful not to exclude anyone from discussions or work-related activities.

  • Communicate appropriately. All communication should be appropriate for a professional audience including people of many different backgrounds. Sexual, sexist or other pejorative and exclusionary language and imagery is not appropriate. Delegates must also ensure that they conduct safe, professional and appropriate online behaviour. Event organisers will treat unacceptable 'electronic behaviour' through social media and other means, in the same way it would treat other unacceptable behaviours.

  • Work collaboratively. The diversity of our colleagues’ backgrounds is an asset. We’re all here to learn, share, and contribute. Fresh perspectives should be valued along with the voices of experience.

Individuals asked to stop any inappropriate behaviour are expected to comply immediately. Anyone violating these rules may be asked to leave the event at the discretion of the organisers. Any participant who wishes to report a concern or violation of this policy is asked to speak confidentially to the event organisers. They will usually be available and visible on the day at the symposium or can be contacted by email at followingaffect@gmail.com

Thank you to our participants for helping to make Following the Affective Turn events a respectful and supportive environment for all. We look forward to welcoming you at the reading groups,  lecture series and at the PGR September Symposium.

Best wishes,

Polly & Joe

We're very excited to safely welcome attendees to our in-person event as part of our 2021 symposia. We encourage you to wear a face covering wherever and whenever you feel comfortable. Additionally, we'd like to ask that you:

  • Take a COVID-19 test before attending the symposium (order a free lateral flow test here)

  • Do not attend if you have tested positive for coronavirus, if you have been instructed to isolate or if you have any symptoms.

The University of Brighton advises that you:

  • Wear a mask when moving around any University campus or building,

  • Follow one-way routes within buildings,

  • Use hand-sanitiser regularly (Edward Street is equipped with dispensers).

We will also endeavour to ensure that:

  • Windows in both rooms are open during the event,

  • Chairs are laid out to allow for social distancing,

  • Materials to disinfect shared devices and surfaces are provided.
